This year alongside providing the holidays we have embraced the Olympics and Paralympics by funding groups of children from Respite Centers and Special Needs Schools to enjoy outward bound days which included indoor rock climbing, abseiling and caving and outdoor activities including kayaking, zip wire and archery, providing activity days to make it possible for the children to participate in fun filled adventure days regardless of their disability. We use various centers including:

Hothersall Lodge

Hothersall Lodge houses a state of the art climbing wall; there is a “slabby” sector of 7.5 meters in height with 8 lines particularly suited to climbers with additional needs. Incorporated into the wall is a very realistic cave system, complete with fossils and stalactites and some wheel chair users can use a trolley to negotiate the lower level. There is also an abseil ramp designed specifically with wheelchair users in mind.

“To see the sense of achievement on a child’s face when they reach the top of the climbing wall is truly remarkable” Andrew Dawson – Trustee

Chill Factore

Chill Factore is home to Disability Snowsport UK a nationwide registered charity providing adaptive skiing for individuals with any disability, including physical, sensory and learning difficulties.

By using adaptive equipment and specialist instruction and support, they are able to cater for even those with very limited mobility.

Airkix is an indoor sky diving facility situated at three sites Basingstoke, Manchester and Milton Keynes. Airkix is brilliant because almost anyone can fly. They have a number of regular customers who are disabled and do their very best to fly anyone with a disability. This is almost always possible where the disability is physical.

Members of The Long-Shaw Kids Fund have experienced numerous days at the Manchester Airkix and we will be funding many more.

By providing the outward bound days, disability snowsport and indoor sky diving we are enabling these children the chance to experience the thrill, excitement and more so the achievement by participating in sports they would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.

We also continue to offering day trips for up to 10 people on the “Margaret Kane”. The Margaret Kane is a wide beam Canal boat purpose built in 2007 providing easy wheelchair and disabled access.

A Very Big thank you to all the crew on “The Margaret Kane”

We would also like to thank The Kensington Foundation, Friends of Families and Haven Holidays for the huge discounts they apply making it possible for us to provide even more holidays.
